Giant Marshmallows
Giant marshmallows work best because they give you enough surface area to create the poison apple design. They also make these treats nice and substantial.
Red and Green Melting Chocolate
The red chocolate melts gives the marshmallows their bright, glossy apple color. Green chocolate melts are used to create the creepy poison effect on the apples.
Pretzel Sticks
Pretzel sticks serve two purposes: they give you something to hold while dipping the marshmallows and they create the little apple stem.
Keep a few extra pretzel sticks on hand because you’ll need to break the tips off before inserting them into the marshmallows.
How to Make Poison Apple Chocolate Marshmallows
Follow the instructions below carefully for the best results.
Instructions:

- Start by putting your melting chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave it for 30 seconds at a time, stirring well between each interval. Don’t skip the stirring! Chocolate can retain its shape even when it’s beginning to melt, so stirring helps distribute the heat and prevents you from overheating it.
- Place one giant marshmallow sideways on your work surface.
- Break the tip off a pretzel stick so that it can be inserted into the marshmallow without poking all the way through the other side.
- Dip the end of the pretzel into the melted red chocolate. Insert it into the side of the marshmallow and allow it to sit for about 30 seconds. This gives the chocolate a chance to harden and helps secure the pretzel stem.
- Next, hold the marshmallow by the pretzel and dip the entire marshmallow into the melted red chocolate. Gently shake off any excess chocolate and place the chocolate-covered marshmallow onto a sheet of parchment paper.

- While the red chocolate is drying, melt your green chocolate using the same 30-second microwave intervals and transfer the melted green chocolate into a piping bag and snip a very small opening at the tip.
- Once the red chocolate has dried, lay the marshmallow flat on the parchment paper. Now it’s time to turn your chocolate-covered marshmallow into a poison apple!
- Pipe two circles onto the front of the marshmallow to create the eyes. Then pipe a wavy line across the front and sides of the marshmallow underneath the eyes.
- Fill in the areas around the eyes and above the wavy line with green chocolate. Don’t worry about making everything perfectly symmetrical. The more irregular and creepy they look, the better!
- Once you’ve finished decorating, carefully stand each marshmallow upright and allow the chocolate to dry completely.
- Then they’re ready to serve!

TMI TIPs on How to get that Spooky Poison Effect:
One of my favorite things about these treats is that the chocolate doesn’t have to look perfectly smooth.
When you stand the decorated marshmallow upright, the green chocolate may continue to move slightly while it finishes drying. This can create little drips and irregular edges that make the apples look even more like they’re covered in mysterious poison. So don’t worry if your lines aren’t perfectly straight. Lean into the spooky look!
You can even make some apples a little different from others. Give one a larger eye, make another one extra drippy, or let some of the green chocolate extend farther down the sides.
If your chocolate becomes too thick while you’re working, you can warm it again briefly. Just remember that chocolate can burn if it’s overheated, so low and slow is the way to go.
Halloween treats are supposed to be fun, and these are a great recipe to get creative with.

Storage
These Poison Apple chocolate Covered Marshmallows are best enjoyed fresh, but they can easily be stored if you want to make them ahead of time. Just put them in an airtight container and store them in a cool, dry place for up to 3 days.
